Five Things To Do This Half Term

February can bring winter sunshine and frosty, bright days, or cold, blustery showers where you need to wrap up warm. Whatever the weather, we hope these ideas will help fill your day and create happy half term memories for all ages.
Games room at the Trefeddian Hotel
We have many activities here that can be enjoyed by all the family. The indoor heated pool is always a winner, and for the less energetic, the warm, relaxing spa bath is perfect to unwind. We also have a games room where a challenge or two can be set, be it at the pool table or with a fast game of air hockey. For adults, we have a full size snooker table. There is also the children’s playroom, equipped with toys and books for the younger guests, or a children’s play park in the hotel grounds. If the weather is wet, spend some time in one of our cosy lounges playing board games or flick through a magazine or a book.

Girl in wellies splashing in a puddle
Bring your wellies for a woodland walk. A short drive away is Ynysmaengwyn, just outside Tywyn. Open all year round, the beautiful woodland setting is perfect for a wander, or for the more adventurous, there is an orienteering course. Wrap up warm and explore the tranquil grounds of the estate once owned by the Corbett family where you can see the ruins of the once grand mansion. There is also the Dovecote that stands in the grounds, a walled garden and a Fairy Glen hidden in the woods. Or make the most of being the only people on the beach and blow away the cobwebs, where the only footsteps left behind will be your own!  Download our scavenger hunt to see how many you can tick off along the way.

The Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn
We are very lucky here as Tywyn has its own cinema. The Magic Lantern Cinema will be showing family films during its matinee throughout half term. First opened in 1893 as the Assembly Rooms, the cinema is definitely worth a visit and has been showing films since the early 1900s. It is steeped in history but is beautifully modern inside, offering table service with a range of snacks and popcorn, a fully stocked bar and two stages where live events are held regularly.

Talyllyn Railway
The Talyllyn Railway is also a family favourite, and although closed for winter, there are trains running during half term - 12th-24th February 2024. You can take your four-legged friends with you for a memorable day out. You can choose to disembark at Dolgoch falls for a walk up to the waterfalls, Abergynolwyn for some lunch and hot drink in the café, or travel to the end of the line at Nant Gwernol for a woodland walk. All Trefeddian guests receive 20% off train journeys.

Zip World
A little further away, but well worth a visit, is Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Fun for all the family and set in a disused mine, Bounce Below is an enormous underground net adventure with slides to different levels. There is also the world’s first underground golf course. The 18-hole course, set over four floors is only accessible by Europe’s steepest cable railway. For the more adventurous, why not have a go at the incredible zip line? The four parallel lines travel at over 50mph - an amazing chance to soak up the beautiful landscapes. You can also take on the caverns - a course of various nooks, crannies, tunnels, tightropes and rope bridges and with 13 zip lines. It’s a fun, all-weather activity as it's completely underground - perfect for when the worst of the Welsh weather hits.
