Geocaching is a fairly new outdoor activity that is fun for all the family. You will need a mobile phone with the geocaching app, good outdoor walking shoes and a sense of adventure! Geocaching is also known as the world largest treasure hunt and the hidden parcels come in all shapes and sizes.
A standard ‘cache’ would be a small box with a little book for you to sign to prove your accomplishment. Some may contain a ‘trackable’. These are logged on the app and you can them put it in a different cache and track its progress online. Some ‘trackables’ have an end mission and you can help it on its way! Other geocaches that can be found are micro (very small) and nanocaches (magnetic) and some also have virtual caches. There are all sorts of guides and handy hints online to help you plan your geocaching.
To get started on your first find, you can either search for a specific place or location that you would like to search. Select your geocache and using your phones gpp signal, follow the instructions to find the cache. Some instructions have hints that can be especially helpful if the cache is very well hidden!
From the Trefeddian, there is a cache to be found in the centre of Aberdyfi which is recommended for new cachers, just a short walk from the hotel. Follow the main road into Aberdyfi and from there take a left, you can see its exact location on the map on the app. There is also one a little further afield in Tywyn, this one listed as a micro cache. Further north along the coast towards Llwyngwril and Fairbourne, there are many, many more listed for you to find and also towards Machynlleth.
