Geocaching
Geocaching is a fairly new outdoor activity that is fun for all the family. You will need a mobile phone with the geocaching app, good outdoor walking shoes and a sense of adventure! Geocaching is also known as the world's largest treasure hunt and the hidden parcels come in all shapes and sizes.
A standard cache would be a small box with a little book for you to sign and prove your accomplishment. Some may contain a trackable which are logged via the app - you can put them in a different location and track their progress online. Some trackables have an end mission which you can help on their way. Other geocaches are micro (very small), nanocaches (magnetic) and some have virtual caches. There are all sorts of guides and handy hints online to help you plan your geocaching.
To get started on your first find, simply search for a specific place or location that you would like to explore. Select your geocache, and using your phone's GPP signal, follow the instructions to find the treasure. Some instructions have hints, which can be especially helpful if the cache is very well hidden!
From the Trefeddian, there is a cache to be found just a short walk from the hotel in the centre of Aberdyfi - this one is recommended for new cachers. Follow the main road into Aberdyfi and from there, take a left - you can see its exact location on the map within the app. There is also one a little further afield in Tywyn - this one is listed as a micro cache. Further north along the coast towards Llwyngwril and Fairbourne, there are many more for you to find, and also towards Machynlleth.
Download the app, decide which cache you fancy, and off you go! You could also take something small of your own to add to the geocache. Good luck and happy geocaching.
