Hints and tips

  • One of the best past times in Aberdyfi is crabbing off the jetty. Visit the shops to purchase a bucket, net and bait, and try to catch the crabs with the line. Top tip - they love smoked bacon! Remember, always release them carefully back into the sea from the beach - they don’t like being dropped from a height
  • No trip to the seaside is complete without an ice cream, so visit the Honey Ice Cream shop in Tywyn - it really is the best, and they have plenty of different flavours, as well as truly tempting toppings for you to try
  • The Trefeddian hotel sits on the coast of Cardigan Bay. It is home to Europe’s largest population of bottlenose dolphins and is said to be the best place in Europe for dolphin watching. Summer months are the best time to spot these graceful creatures
  • Many people travel all around the world to get that amazing sunset photo; but did you know that, in our opinion, Aberdovey has the best sunsets? Each one is different, the colours are vibrant and there isn’t anything more relaxing than sitting in the front of the hotel as the day winds down, watching the sun disappear over the horizon
Harlech Castle

Where to go

  • Visit one of Wales’ famous castles while you are staying in Aberdyfi. You can choose the magnificent Criccieth Castle, Harlech Castle or Caernarfon Castle, or closer to home is Castell y Bere in the Dysynni Valley. These ruins really come to life when you soak in the atmosphere of its location and history
  • There are lots of steam trains to visit. The nearest one is the Talyllyn Railway which leaves Tywyn and trundles up the Fathew Valley, past Dolgoch Falls and to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol. A little further away is the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway which travels between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog, as well as the Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth which takes you to Devil's Bridge
  • If you’re a keen walker looking for a challenge, Cadair Idris is one of the highest peaks in Wales and only a short drive away. Or a little further is Snowdon; can you conquer Wales' highest mountain?
  • About an hour’s drive from the Trefeddian is Blaenau Ffestiniog, home to Llechwedd Slate Caverns. Choose from Bounce Below (an enormous underground net adventure), the world’s first underground golf course, only accessible by Europe’s steepest cable railway, the incredible zip line (where four parallel lines travel at speeds over 50mph) or you can take on the caverns, a course of various nooks, crannies, tunnels, tightropes and rope bridges and with 13 zip lines
  • Tywyn Leisure Park is a great local place to visit, with crazy golf, skittles, tennis, putting, quoits and table tennis - lots of fun for all the family
  • Corris Craft Centre is a wonderful place to spend a day. Here you will find King Arthur's Labyrinth and Corris Mine Explorers, as well as nine craft workshops to visit (some with hands-on sessions) and a gin distillery
  • Did you know Tywyn has its own cinema? Perfect for a rainy day, The Magic Lantern, first opened in 1893 as the Assembly Rooms, has been showing films since the early 1900s so is steeped in history. But inside, it is beautifully modern, offering table service with a range of snacks and popcorn, a fully stocked bar and two stages

What to pack

  • As you're sure to have heard, people are convinced it always rains in Wales. We do have rain - so a raincoat is a must - but Aberdyfi seems to have its own microclimate as we have lots of hot sunny days too. So make sure you all pack a sun hat and sun cream - prepare for all weathers!
  • If you’re a keen walker, we have some fabulous walking routes both on our doorstep and a little further afield, so be sure to pack those walking boots
  • Remember to pack your swimming gear to make the most of our beautiful indoor pool and luxurious hot tub
  • Aberdovey Golf Course is just on our doorstep, so if you’re a keen golfer, be sure to bring your clubs. The 18-hole championship course is right by the sand dunes and the sparkling sea of Cardigan Bay
